When Amy Poehler and Will Arnett announced they were separating after nine years of marriage, reactions on the Internet tended toward “The World Is Ending” and “Love Is Dead #RIPLove.”
For some people, the breakup of comedy’s alpha couple is not to be taken lightly. Normally, I wouldn’t use this space to speculate about anyone’s personal life, but the Poehler/Arnett split is a unique situation. Can you remember a celebrity breakup that made fans this upset? When Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes divorced, it was an excuse to make a Scientology joke. Kim Kardashian’s 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries was a punch line in itself.
This one’s not so funny.
It’s naive to assume a marriage can last simply because the couple are funny and frequently acted funny together on screen. We think that just because two individuals make each other laugh, nothing could go wrong. I’m guilty of this: I always imagined dinner at their house to be like a scene from the best sitcom ever. Unfortunately, these are real people dealing with real issues. No amount of laughter is going to change that.
