Q&A: Actress Judy Greer
LEADING LADIES ARE HOT, while their best friends are kooky. Judy Greer magically manages to combine both of these qualities, making her one of the most appealing character actresses in Tinseltown. For her latest role, she whips out a BlackBerry as a Hollywood manager in "The TV Set," a scathing send-up network television's mediocrity.
» EXPRESS: You're a knitter, right? So, what's your favorite thing you've made?
» GREER: There's one sweater I wear all the time. It's a black cardigan that ties at the waist. It's maybe not my favorite thing, but it's super-practical. The crazier stuff I've done, I never wear because it's too crazy. And some of my stuff looks too homemade, and I don't like that, so I give it to my mother.
» EXPRESS: So, what look do you like?
» GREER: I've fallen in love with Leoffler Randall shoes. I have these high-waisted jeans by Grey Ant that I wear with clogs and some kind of girly top.
» EXPRESS: Are you picky about what you get to wear on camera?
» GREER: Not really. A lot of the characters I play are characters, so I don't usually play people in great outfits. My big thing is that it should be something the character can afford. For this pilot I did recently, I play a high school guidance counselor, so the costume designer brought back all of these clothes from Target and Wal-Mart. They're all tailored to fit me because it has to be Hollywoody, so it looks like Marc Jacobs. But I liked that.
» EXPRESS: Did you put some thought into what this character would wear?
» GREER: She did well financially, but she didn't have a ton of money, so I figured she'd have four great suits — with not-so-great blouses — and great shoes and handbags. She spends more than she should on clothes, but she's responsible.
» EXPRESS: Did you want anything of hers?
» GREER: There was a Chanel handbag that I begged for, but they wouldn't give it to me. I have asked for or bought clothes before when it's been something specifically tailored for my body. It's nice to have those things in your closet.
» EXPRESS: Do you still do ballet?
» GREER: When I first got to L.A., I hadn't danced in years, but I went to a beginner class at the Edge to stay in shape. They were all professional dancers and I thought I was going to die. After class, I was ready for the senior center. When I told my friends I went to the Edge, they were like, "Are you crazy?"
» EXPRESS: What do you do to stay in shape?
» GREER: Well, I spent last year doing Ashtanga yoga, but now I've joined Curves and I love Curves. I hike with my dog there and do my workout and I look great. No one believes me, but it's the best.
» EXPRESS: Where else do you take your dog?
» GREER: We go on long walks. My neighborhood is cute, but the one next to mine has all of these big houses and we can look in the windows at night - although I shouldn't admit to that.
» EXPRESS: What would I see if I walked my dog past your window at night?
» GREER: Nothing, because my shades are always down. But you'd see my dog barking from the couch. My house is all vintage-y, even though it's new construction.
