IN THE WAKE of Monday's fires at Eastern Market and Georgetown's public library, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty was quick to show up at the scene, holding press conferences, demonstrating the best of his tri-athlete's drive and consummate multi-tasker's agility. He promised to rebuild, no matter what. Later, he committed millions upon millions of tax surplus dollars for reconstruction at both sites.
But as The Post's David Nakamura writes this morning, the District's chief financial officer, Natwar Gandhi, was on vacation. And his office won't certify any tax surplus until next week .... Oh, details.
Writes Nakamura:
To Fenty (D), acting quickly to maintain public confidence was more important than sweating the details, which he figured could be worked out later. ... Since taking office, he has scored a wave of political victories, including the passage of his school takeover plan by the [D.C.] council. These successes seem to have emboldened him.In short, Fenty's the anti-Anthony Williams. And he seems very comfortable in that role. (Not that he'd ever let his game face slip ...)
