Bikers Get 1st Shot at New Beltway Bridge

Composite

ANOTHER SECTION of the massive Woodrow Wilson Bridge/Capital Beltway construction project is wrapping up and today in Alexandria, and bicyclists will get to ride across the new Washington Street bridge over the Beltway before cars do.

As The Post's Eric M. Weiss reports, the new $17.7 million bridge deck includes 12-foot-wide bike and walking paths. The bridge's landscaping and decorations are meant to blend in with what you might see in Old Town just up the road. Above is a comparison between what the old Washington Street bridge looked like and a design for the finished product.

  • Any chance of a bike path across the Potomac into Maryland. Imagine riding over from Alexandria to the new Maryland Harbor?
