By the Numbers: A Slight Drop in Homelessness

THE NUMBER OF HOMELESS PEOPLE in the D.C. region dropped slightly over the past 12 months, according to the a report released by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. Here's a snapshot of their findings:

» 11,762: The number of people researchers found living in shelters or on the streets in the area over the past year.
» 3,000: The approximate number of area children who are homeless.
» 12,126: The number of homeless people as recorded by last year's survey, which marks a 3 percent drop.
» 4,696: The number of formerly homeless people living in permanent housing programs, a 37 percent increase since 2004.
» 43: The percentage of homeless people in families who are working across the region.
» 73.6: The percentage of Arlington County homeless people in families who are working.
