Montgomery Co. Brokers Deal With Live Nation

Map It:  Silver Spring

EARLIER THIS SUMMER, talks between Montgomery County and Alexandria's Birchmere music club to open a second location in Silver Spring's former J.C. Penney department store building fell apart. But that didn't mean the dream of adding a new cultural draw to Silver Spring died. The county was reportedly in discussions with Live Nation, the national concert promoter and venue owner, to step in and develop the site.

As the City Paper's City Desk blog reported yesterday, Seth Hurwitz, the owner of the 9:30 Club, has expressed interest in bringing a new music venue to Silver Spring. But if Hurwitz had his eye on the J.C. Penney site, he's too late.

The Post's Richard Harrington and Ann E. Marimow report this morning that Live Nation has signed a letter of intent with the county to bring one of its trademark Fillmore clubs to Silver Spring. The deal will be officially announced at noon.

Meanwhile, the Birchmere is still interested in branching out and starting a Maryland location. As the Silver Spring Penguin reported on Tuesday, it now has plans to head to College Park and form a partnership with the University of Maryland's school of music.

  • Great! Now Silver Spring can have a nearly identical music venue that other cities have!!

No really, I am so disappointed that the business leaders of Silver Spring are bringing in the Wal-Mart of the music industry to area.

I for one will not be going to the Fillmore.
