People: David Letterman Grills Paris Hilton

LETTERMAN MAKES HILTON SQUIRM: Just when we thought we couldn't love David Letterman more than we already do, we watched the video of his interview with Paris Hilton from Friday night. Wowsers. Unlike Larry King's interview with the heiress, the gloves were off (video above). It all began with a simple question: "How'd you like being in jail?" For the next seven minutes, Letterman peppered Hilton with questions that ranged from "How was the bologna?" to "Have your friends treated you differently now that you're out of the slammer?"

Then things got a little tense ...

Hilton: "I've moved on with my life, so I don't want to talk about it anymore."

Letterman: "This is where you and I are different — All I want to do is talk about it. Did you make any friends while you were in jail?"

Hilton: "I'm not answering any more questions about it. I'm here to talk about my clothing line, my movie and my perfume. I'm moving on."

But Letterman didn't. After telling Hilton "this could be your legacy," he finally let the subject drop and chatted with her for the interview's remaining minute about her movie and her perfume. [CBS via YouTube; Larry King Live/CNN]

» PAM MARRYING PARIS' LEFTOVERS? When we heard Pamela Anderson is looking to marry again, we couldn't help thinking, "Is Pam going to be the Elizabeth Taylor of our generation?" Then when we heard who the next fella is, Rick Salomon. Yes, that Rick Salomon of Paris Hilton sex-tape fame. Huh. Well considering Pam also made a naughty tape with Tommy Lee we guess we could say they share something in common. We give them a year before another film accidentally gets released. » WE FEEL CLOSER TO KANYE. Not only has Mr. West started a blog, but on it he talks about how much he likes one of our favorite artists, Feist. [Kanye West]

» R.I.P. MISS MONEYPENNY. Unlike the ladies we've talked about above, you were a class act. [AP via CNN]

  • To tell the truth I have never liked David Letterman, preferring Jay Leno.

This sounds like Letterman needs publicity and therefore he got his name in the press by harrassing Paris. I hope Paris learned never to go on the Letterman show again...and make sure to place in contracts a line requiring the show to pay a hugh amount of money if the jail stint is mentioned in any context other than the host saying that he/she was outraged by the unequal justice Paris was put through.

She should have asked him how many DUI's he has had and how much time the same judge might give Sunderland.

    Letterman SUCKS

  • I have always liked parts of the Letterman show for its comedy clips and stunts. However, there has always been a perverse, condescending and sometimes hurtful aspect to Letterman's personality. His silliness toward professionals - and even his mother - seems to have a mean component. Lately, I've switched to watching the Leno monologue, then switching to Letterman to catch his features. Leno seems to be less self-loathing, and to have a healthier ego.

It may be my age, but too many "comedians" seem too willing to get laughs at the expense of their guests. I must admit, I have always taken Letterman as not being all that bright, and a bit of a jerk. I also think his writers, staff and crew must not like him all that much. They all seem a little wary and distant from him, don't you think?

Oh, well. It's 2007. Cruelty and selfishness seem ever-growing parts of our society. Take care.

  • Yeah I'll agree it was a little harsh, but to be fair, I think so often celebrities these days are treated with kid gloves. Paris Hilton in particular. I've actually met her, and while I enjoyed talking to her, it still doesn't take away from the fact that she is idolized for her partying, bad girl ways. True, Letterman shouldn't have been so tough, but with that said, she shouldn't have been able to go on his show to promote her products without expecting to talk about something real.

  • "Letterman needs publicity"? Look, just because you don't like Letterman that doesn't mean no one else does. He's one of the most recognizable faces in the world (as shown in a poll in US magazine), makes something north of $15M a year, and wins Emmy after Emmy for the quality of writing and production on the show, while being beaten in the ratings by Leno. The difference between him and Leno is that Leno decided, decades ago, to grind all the hard edges off his comedy. It was a savvy move but he's NOTHING like as funny as he was back when he was an unknown working clubs and occasionally allowed himself a saucy four-letter word. He wants to be G-Rated. Works for him. But I and millions of people like me prefer some edge and grit in our comedy. Letterman provides that...AND, don't think for a moment that guests who make public jokes out of themselves don't KNOW that he's going to grind on their embarrassing episodes when they go on the show. Janet Jackson, Paris Hilton, Hugh Grant - all those people went on and got skewered. But they went on. Don't weep for the poor little knucklehead celebrities. They know Dave and they appear and he does what he does and then they weep in print. Who's hunting publicity now? Dave is a far bigger name than Paris Hilton. She's the one who can't keep her face out from in front of cameras.

  • I love Letterman because he is genuinely funny. He doesn't do the fawning host. Leno's interviews read like canned press releases, or approved Q&A . Paris should see the positive - she gets to improve her comedic timing.

  • Oh come on! Don't be sorry for poor Paris!
She is a spoiled little rich girl who is used to setting the tune that everyone must dance to.

Kudos to Dave for tweaking her nose alittle.

I personally don't understand the fasination with this vain,self-centered girl who has yet to contribute anything to society.

  • Wasn't it nice to see the useless brat sit there and squirm - and wasn't it sad to see that the method of getting her own way was to do pouty lip and squeeze tears.
