Express 5: Wayne Wonder on Lovers' Rock

"MY DREAM IS to hear my lovers one drop on the radio just like you hear an R&B version of the song," said dancehall-reggae crooner Wayne Wonder in a smooth voice that's surprisingly deeper than the earnest airy tenor in which he sings. "To hear [a song like my] 'I Still Believe' in the mainstream; that's my dream."

Wonder actually achieved that vision in 2003, when his hit "No Letting Go," from the album "No Holding Back," received regular spins on R&B and hip-hop stations throughout the U.S. He returned last fall with "Foreva" (VP), another collection of ear-friendly pop-reggae that drips with romance: six of the 16 songs feature "love" in their titles ("Gonna Love You," "Share My Love," "For My Love, "The Way You Love Me," "Love and Affection" and, of course, "L.O.V.E.").

The still-boyish Wonder, a 20-year veteran of the industry, comes to Crossroads on Wednesday to seduce a pre-Valentine's Day crowd, so naturally we asked Jamaica's very own Cupid to Express 5 of his favorite love songs of all time:

"Every time I hear 'Reasons,' I remember my girl I love when I was a kid, man. It brings back all of those days; take me right back. I start reminiscing about what could have been. I remember when 'Reasons' played [at a dance], you knew you must find a girl; if you don't find a girl before that song finish, your friends call you a bum. If you don't get a girl by the end of 'Reasons,' you ain't gonna get a girl by the end of the night. That is a song that connects the dots."

2) Wham!, "Careless Whisper"
"The violin sound in it captured me. The whole mood-setting of the song. That was one of my favorite songs."

3) Whitney Houston, "Where Do Broken Hearts Go"
"I've been through that. I remember my girlfriend looking at me and telling me she doesn't see our relationship going anywhere. That was in school, and I always remember 'Where Do Broken Hearts Go.' And whenever I hear that song now, I'm like, 'Whoa, here we go again.' That was the same girlfriend that I wrote 'Saddest Day' [heard on 'No Holding Back' and 'Collectors Series'] about because she left me with a broken heart. Jennifer. [Note: Wonder also covered this Houston heater; wonder if Jennifer ever heard it? You can hear it on his CD "Inna Bashment Style: The Roots of an Urban Warrior."]

4) Michael Jackson, "Human Nature"
"Something about Mike, man. When I listen to it, this guy is really into what he's doing. He really takes you away. I like the whole theme of the song. As an artist, I listen to how the song is written or delivered; the whole structure of the music around it. I listen to a wide variety of things to really comfort me."

5) Wonder first became famous for interpreting non-Jamaican pop hits. While he does original music now, some of the love and almost-love songs he's covered include:
» Thompson Twins, "Hold Me Now"
» Alphaville, "Forever Young"
» Rick Astley, "Never Gonna Give You Up"
» Tracy Chapman, "Fast Car"
» Gloria Estefan, "Anything for You"
» P.M. Dawn, "I'd Die Without You"
» En Vogue, "Hold On"
