DUE TO FINANCIAL PROBLEMS, the party scheduled to take place after the Corcoran's Art Anonymous show on Saturday (which we reported on last week) has been canceled.
The art sale and fundraiser will still go on, but sans food, drink and a DJ.
Zoe Heineman Meyers, who helped organize the sale, said the first she knew of trouble was Monday, when the Corcoran's accounting office sent her an e-mail.
"Apparently the catering arrangements that had been made" without the input of the Friends of the Corcoran were more expensive than the money the Friends hoped to bring in through the art sale, she said.
"We were unaware of how expensive the event had become," she said.
On top of that, the Corcoran membership office has decided the space is too small to hold artists as well as paying guests, so artists who donated work have been asked not to come. (The Corcoran sent out a second e-mail inviting artists to a special "artist-only sneak preview" before the sale.) On the bright side, those art buyers who choose to stick it out are guaranteed at least one work — now, a piece of art is included with admission, and those who want additional works can purchase them for $100 each.
In the meantime, ticket sales have been suspended, and the membership office is offering refunds to anyone who contacts membership@corcoran.org or calls (202) 639-1753.
