Idol Chatter: Will Cook, Archuleta Be Dueling Davids?

IT SEEMS LIKE a no-brainer: Two wildly successful contestants who have never once appeared in the bottom rows of the "American Idol" vote tally go up against a hopeful who's been there five times. They'll clean her clock, right?
Maybe. But if David Archuleta and David Cook think they've got an easy road to next week's finale, they need a little history lesson.
Melinda Doolittle was a virtual paragon of "Idol" safety last year -- until she got an unexpected boot during the show's second-to-last week. And fans two years ago were shocked to see Elliott Yamin sent home at this point in the competition.
But there's a precedent for a dual-David final, too. Kimberley Locke, who also racked up five bottom-tier finishes, made it to the Top 3, then was
booted before the finale.
In any case, both Davids will face a surging Syesha Mercado -- and the unpredictable nature of the show's voting makes predicting this week's results anybody's guess.
» COMING UP: Tonight's performance night, as the Top 3 sing three songs each: one chosen by the singer him- or herself, one picked by the judges and one selected by the "Idol" producers. I'll have a recap on Wednesday, along with another edition of Idol Chatter Live, our "American Idol" live chat, at 11 a.m. Wednesday. I'll have another recap Thursday after Wednesday night's eliminations. Get it all right here at readexpress.com/idol.
Until then, who do you think will make it to the finale? Will Syesha pull off an upset? Are the Davids unbeatable? And is there a lesson all three could learn from folks like Melinda Doolittle and Elliott Yamin? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

By pearl quintal , Posted May 12, 2008 11:34 PMnext star for american idol.
Sorry, but silly statement..."But if David Archuleta and David Cook think they've got an easy road to next week's finale, they need a little history lesson".
Maybe you need a "history lesson"...Do you watch the show? Neither contestant comes across like they "think" they have an easy road to the finale... especially David Archuleta!
By Brett , Posted May 13, 2008 1:57 AMI think that of course Syesha Mercado can give them a run for their money, but she knows that she must pull out all the stops and be crisp to bring it home. Some stack the odds against her, but all of the top three need to work hard at doing their best. They all have small things to tweek....
By Lawanda , Posted May 13, 2008 2:26 AMIt certainly does look like there will be a D-squared finale, but I'm not going to count Syesha out. She certainly feels like the Kimberly Locke to the Davids' Ruben and Clay, but we'll see. It's been a weird season.
By EOC , Posted May 13, 2008 10:05 AMLet's just put it this way...I am not looking forward to Wednesday. I'm crossing my fingers for a Syesha/Cook finale but I doubt very seriously that Archuleta's fans will let up on voting their arses off. This will be a very disappointing season if Archuleta wins in my opinion...
By Lisa , Posted May 13, 2008 10:16 AMI'm all in for Syesha, she deserves final 2 along with David C. Lil david (and his dad) are up for a primetime fall.
By Sheriff , Posted May 13, 2008 12:32 PMYeah, Sheriff -- I wonder what the fallout of Dadchuleta's rehearsal banning will have on the youngster.
By EOC , Posted May 13, 2008 1:23 PMSyesha can't be counted out. Remember what Ryan said last week. The Top 3 were within 1 million of each. Based on totals I would say there were all within 13 and 15 million votes each. That is too close for comfort. And, I believe Syesha was #1 the night Brooke left. You can find that controversy in the forums and blogs. But, I also believe a majority of Jason's votes are going to shift to the Davids.
By Paul , Posted May 13, 2008 1:25 PMCareerwise, it would be better for David Cook if he were NOT packaged as this year's American Idol. Indie rock is not fond of factory-marketed talent.
One wonders if this consideration might cause him to pull his punches.
David A. and Syesha, on the other hand, really really want the crown.
In my opinion, AI and David A. are a perfect match. On the third hand, it would be a dream come true for Syesha if she won, though not for the AI marketing machine, which won't know what to do with her.
By crabpaws , Posted May 13, 2008 1:27 PMBring it on!
Let the chips (and the Davids) fall where they may!
By RedRocket , Posted May 13, 2008 1:49 PMI would hope that america can just get over the squeaky clean image or the rocker. I like her because i think she has a nice voice. If i had to choose i would much rather see david cook than the squeaky clean young man but it is unlikely. I will still be voting heavily tonight for her.
By eunice , Posted May 13, 2008 1:56 PMI never take anything for granted after having my favorite voted off early in the past (Chris Daughtry) I love David Archuleta this year and hope he makes it to the final two. It's too bad about all the fuss about his Dad because it is not about his Dad. David has loved singing all his life and has an amazing God given gift. He touches peoples hearts. He may not be articulate in interviews yet, because of his youth and shyness, but when he sings, he shares his heart and soul and he communicates. I think the kid is great and will be even better as he matures. He is idealistic still and I hope this is not crushed by some of the haters. He is humble and grateful and a breath of fresh air.
By cb wallace , Posted May 13, 2008 2:01 PMThanks for the comments, all.
I'd agree that Syesha might be tougher to beat than lots of folks give her credit for -- and the fact that no bottom two was announced on the night Brooke left always struck me as odd. Perhaps "Idol" was setting us all up for a big second-to-last week bombshell?
I got so interested in the David/Dad saga that I wrote a post this afternoon on it. You can check it out here: http://www.readexpress.com/read_freeride/2008/05/idol_chatter_all_the_worlds_a_stage_dad.php.
By Greg Barber , Posted May 13, 2008 4:00 PMcrabpaws: i think you got it right....little david and AI are made for each other. on the other hand, david cook, the superior talent might may be better off running 2nd or 3rd. in any case, david cook is going to be the biggest seller of music, win or not. possibly outselling daughtry (who i personally never cared for) because he is a more appealing man. syesha will do well no matter what happens.
By etaylor , Posted May 13, 2008 5:02 PMI think all three are very gifted in their own ways and will do well for themselves. I do, however, believe David A. has the most musical talent. I wish people wouldn't hold his dad against him - you can't choose your relatives. I think it will be the David squared next week with Archie coming out on top. (I hope!) I just hope all three give great performances tonight of which they can be proud.
By Jan , Posted May 13, 2008 6:30 PMDavid Archie will get more votes than ever, the repercussion of all these rumors about his dad, which was not true, translates to more sympathy votes, since around the world, David A is so loved.
By Robert , Posted May 13, 2008 7:24 PMIdol is over now, anyway, at least from the standpoint of future success. To a degree, crabpaws is right. Unless your name is Clarkson or Underwood, winning Idol really only means that you won Idol. It sure as heck doesn't mean you're going to sell any records. D-Cook has all the indicators that he'll go triple platinum right along with Daughtry. But, go ahead and cheer on Archuleta. I'll bet you two Taylors and a Fantasia that you'll never hear him again after this season ends.
By DDinSoCal , Posted May 13, 2008 7:41 PMSimon Cowell is throwing David Cook an easy pitch tonight -- he's to sing Roberta Flack's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Guess Cowell wants to mobilize Cook's fan base in a big way. He'll have a hard time getting out of this one.
By crabpaws , Posted May 13, 2008 9:10 PMMelinda Doolittle was the best last years. When it time for peoples to decided alway the same the good never be choose. Melinda doing really great without American Idol tittle. She will released her album soon. If you want more info about her new career www.mdstreetteam.com You are very welcome to join us.
